CinemaCon 2012 is fast approaching and the excitement is building… As April 23 approaches, I’m reminded of the first time I experienced an industry convention called ShoWest. In 1989, I was charged with coordinating the transportation & staging of The Batmobile used in Tim Burton’s BATMAN to Bally’s Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas for the Warner Bros. Luncheon. I was so excited because I had always heard of this unique event, which takes place once a year where the Studios show off their upcoming releases to theatre owners. This, coupled with the fact that I was responsible for bringing BATMAN’s Batmobile to show the theatre owners was doubly exciting! How did Olson Visual install the gigantic 40 foot high X 32 foot wide TITANIC banner at the Regency Village Theatre Westwood in Los Angeles? Starting at 1 am, it took Olson Visual over 5 hours, 2 cranes and 5 workers to install this humongous banner. In fact, the installers saw the sun come up as they were completing the job! Olson Visual’s recent installation of a gigantic 40 foot high X 32 foot wide banner for Paramount’s 3D re-release of TITANIC continues a long standing Hollywood Tradition of Showmanship of placing giant attention getting cut-outs and banners on the tower of Los Angeles’ iconic Regency Village Theatre in Westwood. To put it in perspective…this banner is 1.7 times bigger than KING KONG (who was 24 feet tall) and 171 times bigger than a one sheet poster. It took Olson Visual over 5 hours, 2 cranes and 5 workers to install this humongous banner on the historic tower. The 170 foot high Village Theatre tower can be seen from most any vantage point in Westwood Village and is considered the symbol of this LA suburb, home of another institution…UCLA. Below are recent installations for Lionsgate’s THE HUNGER GAMES of giant backlit graphics by Olson Visual at the ArcLight Sherman Oaks, ArcLight Pasadena and ArcLight Beach Cities in Southern California. These walls consist of backlit one sheet poster cases which, when seen as a single piece, is very striking to behold.
When I started at Warner Bros. in 1978, I had the rare honor of having a publicist named Marty Weiser as my mentor. Marty was the greatest publicist at Warner Bros. who devoted 50 years of his most creative life to his beloved Studio and was considered by all of his colleagues to be a marketing genius. Some day, I will tell you more about this amazing creative man. The first thing Marty taught me was about the publicity stunt. The publicity stunt is a staged event that is designed to get media coverage. It is the most creative and cost effective way to get media attention. “THE PUBLICITY STUNT”, Marty would tell me, “IS THE ART OF MAKING NEWS”.
